The four counties of Neath Port Talbot, Carmarthenshire, Swansea Bay and Pembrokeshire of South West Wales have mapped out a new 'Legends' cycle trail, designed to give visitors the opportunity of exploring this corner of Wales at a more sedate pace by bike whilst combining visits to a number of the region’s very best cultural sights on route and learning all about the many thrilling legendary tales associated with them.

The South West Wales Legends Cycle Route

Over a total distance of 190km, this history-rich cycle route is designed so that visitors can enjoy a day cycle ride exploring just one county or cover the whole trail over a four-day trip during an enjoyable mini-break - starting from Afan Forest Park and finishing in the town of Fishguard on the South West coast of Pembrokeshire.

The Legends Cycle Route brings extraordinary stories to life - ancient and modern-day, mythical and absolutely true - featuring legendary characters such as Merlin and King Arthur, St David and pirate king Barti Ddu, to name just a few. Soak up the fascinating history of mining in the South Wales Miners’ Museum in Neath Port Talbot, marvel at Kidwelly Castle in Carmarthenshire, one of the most intact castles in South Wales, learn about the celebrated Welsh poet Dylan Thomas at the Exhibition in his birthplace of Swansea Bay, or even dare to visit Annwn - the entrance to the Celtic Underworld in Pembrokeshire.

The cycle route is suitable for all levels to explore, whether with the family or friends there is something for everyone. Click on the free downloadable guides, which have been tailored to Google Maps, making the journey even easier to navigate. Each county’s guide combines legendary stories with sight-seeing highlights and suggested pubs and cafes to refuel along the way. Other useful inclusions are transport links and local cycle hire and repair shops as well as top tips of where to stay. Prepare to be distracted by the suggested tourist attractions, beautiful scenery and picturesque villages, making this the perfect opportunity to explore South West Wales.
